SU Closed Monday, January 26 - Classes Held Virtually

January 25, 2026, 5 p.m.

SALISBURY,  MD---To allow time to ensure the campus is thoroughly cleared following today’s weather, Salisbury University will be closed on Monday, January 26. All on-campus operations and activities are canceled.

Only employees designated as essential, emergency, or operationally critical, and who have been directed by their supervisor, should work on January 26. All other employees should not report to work.

To support continuity of operations and the first day of the spring semester, some employees who are not traditionally designated as essential may be identified as operationally critical and directed to work remotely on January 26. Employees should not self-determine work expectations. Supervisors will contact affected employees directly regarding reporting or remote-work expectations.

All employees should watch for a follow-up email from Human Resources with instructions regarding time entry for the day.

January 23, 2026, 6:15 p.m.

SALISBURY, MD---The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for Wicomico County and surrounding areas from 1 p.m. Saturday, January 24, until 7 p.m. Sunday, January 25. A state of emergency has been declared in Maryland to make resources available in advance of the pending storm.

Forecast

The NWS currently is forecasting snowfall of 4-8 inches in the region beginning Saturday evening, transitioning to rain by Sunday afternoon. Expected freezing rain and ice on Sunday evening may increase the chance of extended, widespread power outages. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout much of the following week.

Classes and Move-In

In anticipation of inclement weather, SU has made the decision to begin the spring semester virtually the week of January 26-30. Classes will be held virtually during that time, returning to in-person instruction on Monday, February 2, weather permitting. Move-in for residential campus students, originally scheduled Saturday-Sunday, January 24-25, has been postponed. Students should check their email for more information.

Campus Operations

To allow parking lots to be plowed, those currently parked on campus are asked to move their vehicles off campus, or to the Wayne Street Garage, by 8 p.m. Saturday.

As the storm develops, the University will make a decision about campus operations by Sunday, including closure, modified operations, or liberal leave. Those who are approved for remote work and have their SU laptops or devices with them should log in from home this weekend to confirm system access and functionality. This is a precautionary measure only at this time, pending the operational status of campus on Monday.

Safety Measures

Once the snowfall begins, roads throughout the region are expected to become extremely treacherous. Snow and ice removal may not occur immediately in all areas, and backroads may remain impassable for several days. SU and greater community members are encouraged to limit travel when possible and to ensure they have adequate food and water on hand. Essential and critical employees who are required to report to campus should prioritize safety and contact their supervisor if they encounter any issues.

Flashlights, a battery-powered radio (or hand-cranked emergency weather radio), extra batteries, and warm clothes and blankets are recommended in the event of power outages. Individuals also should keep cell phones and any external power sources charged, as outages typically occur without warning.

The Governor’s Office also has to help keep individuals safe during and following the storm.
