The Fulton School of Liberal Arts supports the professional development of its faculty, as manifested via research and other significant developmental activities that enhance teaching capabilities and contribute to the advancement of knowledge. All full-time faculty members in Fulton are eligible to apply. Fulton Faculty Grants are supported through the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton Endowment and through the indirect costs generated by faculty grant-writing activity. The Fulton Faculty Grant Committee screens all applications.
All full-time faculty members of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, including full-time non-tenure track faculty, may apply for a Fulton Faculty Grant funding not to exceed $3,000 per academic/fiscal year.
You can receive up to $3,000 per academic/fiscal year (FY running from July 1 to June 30). To receive the funding, you need to have submitted any recent post-grant reports for the previously received funding.
There are two types of applications: Expedited Committee Review applications and Full Committee Review applications.
The expedited committee review application is a streamlined application since it reflects a scholarly pursuit with clear boundaries. It can be used by Fulton faculty members who have been accepted to present their scholarly work or creative activity at reputable academic conferences germane to their disciplines. It requires documentation regarding acceptance, and a breakdown of expenses (incurred or expected) during travel with their attending receipts or estimation proofs. Please use the Excel Budget Planning Workbook for your anticipated expenses and submit it with your application.
The deadline for expedited application submissions is on the first of the month, by 4:30 pm (Sept 1, Oct 1, Nov 1, Dec 1, Feb 1, Mar 1, Apr 1, May 1)
The full committee review application should be used for projects that are more expansive or not as clear-cut as presenting at a conference. It can be used by Fulton faculty members requesting funding for projects and activities that expand disciplinary expertise (research project, writing a book/ book chapter/ article, participating in art exhibit/ performance/ creative work, or developing a grant proposal for submission to a government agency or private foundation). They can also be used to cover reimbursable research expenses, including travel for purposes of research, presentation, exhibition, or performance. Please use the Excel Budget Planning Workbook for your anticipated expenses and submit it with your application.
The deadlines for full committee review application submissions are as follows, received no later than 4:30 pm:
Submit by September 7: For grants in support of work conducted between October 1 and January 31
Submit by January 7: For grants in support of work conducted between February 1 and May 31
Submit by May 7: For grants in support of work conducted between June 1 and September 30
All Fulton Faculty Grant applications and all supporting materials must be submitted electronically via the applications linked below. See each application for specific instructions related to that application.
Submitters must scan their supporting application documents and submit them as a single, multi-page PDF document as part of the chosen application. This can be done using applications such as Adobe Pro*, as well as services like or Google Drive’s scan function, both of which are free and allow users to simply take pictures of documents with their phones and combine them into a single PDF. Please remember that it is also possible to save a Word document as a PDF, which may be the most straightforward option for some. In addition, applicants may opt to use one of the multifunction machines on campus through which they can scan to PDF. (*Please note that some fillable PDF forms are often password protected, which can prevent the act of combining them with other PDF files using certain applications.)
All full-time faculty members of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, including full-time non-tenure track faculty, may apply for a Fulton Faculty Grant funding not to exceed $3,000 per academic/fiscal year. Priority will be given to first applications in each round; second applications will be placed behind first applications in the applicable round’s queue. No applications will be considered from previous Fulton faculty grant recipients who have not submitted their most recent post-grant reports (1-2 pages) prior to submission of a new application.
Individuals may apply for a monetary grant in order to expand disciplinary expertise by:
engaging in a research project
writing a book, book chapter, or article
participating in a special art exhibit, performance, or other creative work;
developing a grant proposal for submission to a government agency or private foundation.
Grants may cover reimbursable research expenses, including travel for purposes of research, presentation, exhibition or performance.
Priority in funding will be given to projects that:
are likely to lead to one or more publications or to a major grant proposal
entail a conference presentation of significant scholarly merit
will result in curricular innovation that advances the mission and Strategic Plan of Salisbury University, the Fulton School and the program in question
Fulton Faculty Grants are competitive. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that their application clearly explains the significance of the work for which support is being requested to a non-discipline specific audience.
Applications for multipleprojects, not to exceed $3,000, during the same grant period must be submitted in separateapplications and prioritized.
Multiple projects at the samedestination should be submitted together clearly explaining the two parts and prioritized.
Applications related to curriculumdevelopment must also include a statement from the faculty member’s departmentchair regarding the proposal and its contribution to the faculty member’s development and that of the program in question.
Computer software purchases may be considered as a legitimate research expense. However, applicants must verify in their application that they have consulted with IT (suggested contact: Matt Tawes) prior to purchase, that there are no compatibility or security issues, that the purchase will take place through the University, and that they understand that any reimbursement is on a one-time basis Where annual renewal is desired or needed, individuals must consult with their department's chair to explore avenues for funding other than this one-time grant.
Applications in support of a project that requires more than a week’s absence from campus during the fall or spring semester, or, in combination with other activities during the semester in question, takes the faculty member away from campus for more than a week, must include a statement of support from the faculty member’s departmentchair. For more information, see the Fulton Faculty Absence Policy.
Applications for the funding of projects that include human subjects must include an approval statement from the SU Institutional Research Board ( IRB) Committee on Human Research.
Fulton Grant awards may cover 100% of the requested amount or a percentage thereof, depending on the availability of funds, up to a maximum of $3,000.
The Fulton Grant Committee will notify each applicant of the Committee’s decision within two weeks of the application submission deadline.
Faculty members who are traveling to conferences are highly encouraged to also apply for both Faculty Development and Salisbury University Foundation (SUF) grants. Fulton Faculty Grants will NOT pay for workshops, tuition, equipment, or conference attendance without a formal presentation/specific project. However, expenses associated with organizing or putting together a panel for a conference will be funded, as will expenses related to moderating a forum, judging, or serving as a responder.
Travel events should not exceed 4 nights in total. Exceptions can be arranged with your department and the Fulton Dean, if justified.
Per Diem Meal Rates: Not to exceed the standard breakfast, lunch, & dinner rates posted on the Meal Rates
Airfare: If possible, not to exceed $750
Hotel: If possible, not to exceed $250 per night
Conference Registration: If possible, not to exceed $500
Membership Fee: If possible, not to exceed $100. It must be demonstrably attributable to reducing the cost of attending conference, or a prerequisite for presenting in it.
It is your responsibility to work with your department’s administrative support staff to request reimbursement prior to the end of the fiscal year during which you receive a grant award. We have instituted a strict annual deadline of June 15 to have your request submitted to the Fulton Dean’s Office for approval via Workday. If submitted after that date, the amount awarded will count toward the next fiscal year (July 1—June 30), limiting your potential funding options during that period. Additionally, a final report addressing your grant-funded accomplishments (1-2 pages) should be submitted to the Dean’s office at the end of your travel event or project. Failure to do so will result in the committee declining future applications for funding.
Will the travel create more than a week’s absence from campus?
If so, do you have a letter from your department’s chair?
Have you received approval from the IRB (if includes human subjects)?
If so, are you including the IRB approval in your application?
